Taiwan showed resilience and democratic strength, it did not bow to Chinas threats.
China on the other hand, has shown what happens if you sign an integration agreement several times – oppression!
73 years ago, Tibet has signed such an agreement, where they were promised to keep their political system and freedom of religion. But of course, that did not happen and since 1951 there have been periodic riots and rebellions against Peking, the last time in 2012. There is no freedom of religion, the Dalai Lama fled to India, it is strictly forbidden to say his name or show a picture of him, the people are under constant surveillance and there are even extrajudicial executions.
Of course, in Hong Kong the exact same thing happened, promises and agreements were broken; the people have lost their freedom.
Very bitter that in 1949, Tibet’s Government was seeking political (and military) cooperation with the UK, India and the USA, but it was unheard. We should not let that happen again and learn from the mistakes made in the past, that we have to stand with Taiwan; we have to stop China’s colonialism.
And of course we can draw the similarities to Ukraine, where another democracy needs support against an imperialistic dictator.
